Hot stuff at the Food Bank

We’ve got some new capacity that will provide clean, wholesome food for our community.

Technology

Our greenhouse is producing food and weathering storms with cutting-edge design

The growing dome looks pretty, but it’s highly technical too. It’s able to withstand gale force winds to large hail, and the system comes equipped with electric fans for easy temperature regulation. It is a passive solar project that uses eco-friendly materials, including UV-resistant panels that boast an impressive 2.8 R-value to trap heat.

Thus far the greenhouse has successfully produced cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, peas, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, squash and strawberries.

Impact

How our greenhouse is feeding the community

The greenhouse program aims to be a constant source of fresh veggies for the Food Bank's hamper program. It's not just about growing food; it's a chance for green-thumbed volunteers to lend a hand in feeding our community.

Excitingly, the grow dome will also offer educational opportunities galore! From mastering natural pest control to diving into composting, rainwater collection, and even vermiculture, there's something for everyone eager to deepen their knowledge of urban agriculture and food security.

By integrating technology and traditional farming practices, the Food Bank greenhouse presents a unique platform for innovation, inspiring sustainable solutions for urban living. This blend of education, community, and sustainability makes the grow dome not just a learning space, but a hub for future environmental stewards to cultivate a greener, more resilient world.
