more hydroponic development
Feeding our community through innovation and cherry tomatoes.
Hydroponic cherry tomato farm
Turning an office space into an indoor food farm.
Thanks to the generous support of the Co-op Community Spaces grant, our hydroponic cherry tomato farm brings fresh, nutrient-rich produce directly to the heart of the Red Deer Food Bank. Installed by NuLeaf Farms in Calgary, this innovative indoor farm showcases the potential of controlled-environment agriculture to support community food security year-round.
The system features hydroponic grow walls developed by Just Vertical, a Canadian company known for its efficient and aesthetically designed vertical growing technology. These walls use water-based, soil-free growing methods to deliver optimal nutrients directly to plant roots—reducing water usage while maximizing growth and yield.
When operating at full capacity, the farm supports up to 2,688 cherry tomato plants at various stages of life, allowing for continuous harvesting throughout the year. The tomatoes are grown without pesticides or herbicides and are picked fresh for use in our food hampers, community kitchen, and potential social enterprise initiatives.
Why hydroponic tomatoes?

Fresh, flavourful, nutrient-dense produce grown right on site
This farm serves as a reliable source of fresh food and an educational hub, demonstrating how innovative technologies can help communities grow their food sustainably.
