Help us Grow food in the community
Community gardens are an asset to any neighbourhood, bringing people together with a common purpose of building community by ensuring food security for themselves and others.
Community Gardens
Partnership with the City of Red Deer – Community Garden Production
The Red Deer Food Bank is partnering with the City of Red Deer to utilize underused community garden plots in Normandeau to grow fresh produce for individuals and families accessing food support programs.
Through this initiative, Food Bank staff and volunteers are planting, maintaining, and harvesting produce from designated garden spaces to help increase access to fresh, locally grown food in the community. The project also supports environmental sustainability, community engagement, and hands-on learning opportunities related to urban agriculture and food production.
By making productive use of available garden space, this partnership helps strengthen local food security while creating opportunities for community involvement and education.
Supporting ReThink Red Deer’s Common Ground Garden Project
The Red Deer Food Bank is proud to support ReThink Red Deer’s Common Ground Garden Project (CGGP), an urban agriculture initiative focused on improving local food security while fostering accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, and community connection.
The Common Ground Garden Project creates welcoming public growing spaces that encourage knowledge sharing, social enterprise, and community participation. Through this collaboration, the Red Deer Food Bank supports the broader goal of increasing access to fresh food and strengthening community-based food systems in Central Alberta.
Volunteer-supported growing spaces also serve as valuable outdoor learning environments, offering opportunities for people of all ages to gain hands-on experience in gardening, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.
Volunteer with us!
The Parkside Community Gardens at Normandeau needs volunteers
We need volunteers to support the work we are doing in our neighbourhood at Parkside Community Gardens. We are looking for volunteers to help with planting, weeding, watering and harvesting this garden season.
We also invite you to join our Harvest Team! We are looking for volunteers to visit City Food Forests and other Community Gardens to collect excess produce that can be used in our emergency hamper program. We’re building a team of volunteers who would be willing to help collect extra produce from gardens and trees around the city to ensure no food is wasted.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the form on the Volunteering page, or email greenthumb@reddeerfoodbank.com.
