Garden 49
Growing Food. Growing Skills. Growing Community.
Garden 49 is the Red Deer Food Bank's food production and horticulture program. Through greenhouses, hydroponics, community gardens, educational programs, and local food production, we are creating sustainable ways to increase access to fresh food while teaching valuable growing skills.
From lettuce and microgreens to community garden plots and educational workshops, Garden 49 helps connect people with where their food comes from while supporting food security across Central Alberta.
Every purchase, donation, and volunteer hour helps us grow more food for our community.

Innovative Indoor Farming Technology
Garden 49 is home to innovative indoor growing technology that allows us to produce fresh, nutritious food year-round. Made possible through the generous support of the Co-op Community Spaces grant and installed by NuLeaf Farms of Calgary, our controlled-environment growing systems demonstrate how modern agriculture can help strengthen local food security.
Today, these systems are used to grow a variety of crops, including leafy greens, herbs, tomatoes, and other specialty produce, providing a reliable source of fresh food regardless of weather or season. By combining advanced growing technology with sustainable practices, we can maximize production while using less water and space than traditional farming methods.
A portion of what we grow is used to support the Red Deer Food Bank's Food Hub, helping provide clients with access to fresh, locally grown produce. Additional produce is available for purchase by the public, with every sale helping fund the programs and services of the Red Deer Food Bank. Through innovation, education, and food production, Garden 49 is helping build a more resilient and food-secure community.
Hydroponic Growing
At Garden 49, we're growing food in innovative ways. Our hydroponic systems allow us to produce fresh, nutritious leafy greens year-round by growing plants in nutrient-rich water rather than soil. This efficient growing method uses less water, requires less space, and allows us to harvest fresh produce regardless of Alberta's growing season.
A portion of the produce grown through Garden 49 is used to stock the Red Deer Food Bank's Food Hub, helping ensure clients have access to fresh, locally grown vegetables. Additional produce is available for purchase by the public, with proceeds supporting the programs and services of the Red Deer Food Bank.
By purchasing Garden 49 produce, you're doing more than buying fresh, local food. You're helping support food security in our community while investing in sustainable food production and educational opportunities. Every harvest and every purchase helps us grow more food, support more people, and build a stronger community.
